Letra:

Alas, my love, you do me wrong,
To cast me off discourteously.
For I have loved you for so long,
Delighting in your company.

Chorus:
Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.

Your vows you've broken, like my heart,
Oh, why did you so enrapture me?
Now I remain in a world apart
But my heart remains in captivity.

chorus

I have been ready at your hand,
To grant whatever you would crave,
I have both wagered life and land,
Your love and good-will for to have.

chorus

If you intend thus to disdain,
It does the more enrapture me,
And even so, I still remain
A lover in captivity.

chorus

My men were clothed all in green,
And they did ever wait on thee;
All this was gallant to be seen,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.

chorus

Thou couldst desire no earthly thing,
but still thou hadst it readily.
Thy music still to play and sing;
And yet thou wouldst not love me.

chorus

Well, I will pray to God on high,
that thou my constancy mayst see,
And that yet once before I die,
Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me.

chorus

Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu,
To God I pray to prosper thee,
For I am still thy lover true,
Come once again and love me.

chorus

  • The Gregorian monks didn't like the harmonic minor scale :(

  • I wish I could have this in lossless format

  • That's soooooooo amazing! Greetings from Brazil.

  • @HopeVJustice Green was a color that symbolized sexual activity. It is theorized that it may refer to grass stains from intercourse in a field, or something along those lines.

  • @FatboyfromIIPara Wikipedia: There's a persistent belief that Greensleeves was composed by Henry VIII for his lover and future queen consort Anne Boleyn. She allegedly rejected King Henry's attempts to seduce her and this rejection may be referred to in the song when the writer's love "cast me off discourteously". However, Henry did not compose "Greensleeves", which is probably Elizabethan in origin and is based on an Italian style of composition that did not reach England until after his death

  • @HEARTOF24K easy fix. make a play list, insert this song into it, several times. select random, then hit play. it wont ever stop. until YOU stop it

  • This is probably my fave song ever (Greensleeves in general, not this version (: ). <3

What did Henry mean exactly by greensleeves? Did Anne wear a green dress or was it like her pure, grace or something along those lines? Not that it makes any difference, i'm just curious (: .

  • From pOland:p

  • Such a beautiful song, sung in a superb manner, shame it was written by such a tyrant......

  • Whether or nay Henry was the composer, the song remains haunting and beautiful-if he didn't,he damned well ought to have!
