The dude did what he wanted to do,that was a will,not a life plan,he'd never taken classes or studied about it,he just wanted to do it!
He had his reasons,every1 takes stupid decisions someday, mainly in such sucking conditions

I've been trekking mountain ranges all of my life. I've done plenty of stuff like that. Even been stranded a few times due to weather etc. The difference is, I have enough experience to know how quickly things can go bad in remote locations. This kid did something that he was completely unprepared for. The movie portrays him in a romantic fashion, where in reality what he did was utterly foolish, and he got caught out. With the right prep and training he would still be alive.
