A 2.4 mile cruise north along the Coventry Canal down the Atherstone Flight of 11 locks on a wonderfully sunny late September morning.

This flight is maintained by lockkeeper Tony Ward MBE and his team from British Waterways. What a great job they do and an excellent length they keep. Tony's cottage and his St Georges flag can be seen besides the Top Lock near the beginning of the video.

We were followed down the flight by nb Katie, an hotel boat of the AWAY4AWHILE fleet. For once Katie was NOT the fastest narrowboat on the cut! As you will see, this bit of the canal was quite busy for the time of year.

The movie comprises two and a half hours of raw, uncut video, simply strung together and compressed by 94% to nine minutes. The compression masks my crap movie making skills to the effect that if you blink you can't see the joins.

If you are a fan of the UK canal network then treat yourself to a look at Nick's Canal Planner:

For more information about the Coventry Canal have a peep at:

In case PETA are watching no pigs or pineapples were harmed during the making of this movie.

  • what time of year did you do this, i did it the third week of july and had several queues

  • It was Tuesday 26th September 2006 and I seem to remember we were in the top lock by 9:00 am. I don't recall too many waits but do remember that Away4Awhile's NB Katie was pissed off that we were in front of him.

  • when i went on holiday on the grand union canal the instructor lied to us because when we were going through the first lock (leighton lock) he said it would be the heaviest lock we would come across but some of the locks after that were even heavier.

  • I wouldn't know about such things as heavy locks. As you will notice in the video I have slaves to do these things for me.

  • I was walk by canals in Atherstone such lovely town and nice place i hope to visit again some day . Greating from Poland

  • And greetings from the USofA. Thanks for watching and keep visiting the English canals

  • i live in atherstone, i did enjoyed watch this :) thank you

  • yah! i remember this! i was in the blue!

  • I worked very long and hard on the background sounds on this one and they are not all as compressed as you might think, but they seemed to add a bit of reality so I am grateful for the comment. We honestly have no idea what Urchin is going on about with gate twatting and leaving open. As you rightly remark opening the paddles causes eddy's and moves the boat. Watch out for that on the Hatton Flight they are vicious. I LOVE TERM LOCK LUCHER YOU MAY JUST HAVE GIVEN US A NEW BOAT NAME!
