  • @oopik I am a Canadian, and I understand the desire to help: our numbers low, the number of patients waiting grows daily.

You have donated to 1 person, but multiple times. Typically, after more than 2 donations, you are withdrawn from the registry. You've already helped more than most! There is plenty you can still do. Here are some ideas:

    -Let them know they're needed.

-Tell your friends you have donated and what the process was like for you.

-Show them how to register online at onematch.ca

  • In the UK you can remain on the register as a possible match for other but I honestly do not know what the rules are for Canada.

  • I live in Canada, and donated bone marrow once, and peripheral stem cells four times for my cousin. I tried to sign up for the Bone Marrow registry, which is, as far as I know, an Inernational database of bone marrow donors. I was told by the Canadian agency that because I had donated once, I couldn't register, and that I could never donate again. I don't want to be compensated...I just want to be able to help.

  • @daletacar Oh really? I thought they had to be in the local area, I figured the organ donated would only have a few hours at the most. But I still want to study abroad in Australia. I've wanted to do that since before I was willing to be a marrow donor. And if I make it and I'm called there... I don't see why not.

It's not necessary for the donor to travel. Someone from the blood donor agency hand carries the marrow from the donor location, once it is prepped, to the recipient's country or state by plane within 24 hours. I am blessed to have been in position to give Daniel and extra 9 years of life with his family and friends!

  • ...and I am so sorry he passed away. May his testimony live on. ☂

  • Do people actually travel overseas too, to donate marrow or stem cells? If so, how often does that happen?

  • Wow this is so tearful watching this not knowing the outcome for the future. Saddest news this 2008.

  • RIP Little Daniel

May your soul surely enter the kingdom of heaven to be with our father God

    Amen

  • Everytime I see or hear about it, it brings tears to my eyes. I seriously cant believe this has happened... But daniel was a lovely young man and he will be truely missed by all. I pray for all his family and friends. RIP DANIEL.xx
