I've been talking a lot recently about David Sloan Wilson and his idea of 'practical reality' vs. 'factual reality', so I thought I'd better rehearse those ideas out loud. I'm particularly interested in trying to map this distinction onto one that I already use between different kinds of epistemological 'spaces'. I imagine the space of personal practical knowing as effectively egocentric, with the items of knowledge that populate that space arranged centrifugally around this centre and oriented to preserve and define that egoistic axis. The second space, which I associate with depersonalised empiricism, is smooth and flat, rather like the ideal Cartesian space prior to Einstein, Hilbert etc. This second space is where objective facts exist unaffected by the gravity wells of individual value-laden egos. The first space I correlate with Sloan Wilson's 'practical reality', the second with his 'factual reality'.

  • @AfterFauve001 It is very much a part of the first person's point of view, Practical Reality "If I can't do it than neither can you.

Factually Reality comes down to "this is how its done and how it works but there are no guarantees you can do it"

Everyday experience "you'll never make it, but send me some money when you do".

  • to use your concept of studying the arts,

Practical reality - you can't make a living at it,

Factual reality, if you do make it into the arts professionally - you will be set for life, its just not as easy as getting a degree and getting a job straight out of school, it takes talent which school doesn't teach.

Piratical reality, talent you are born with.

Factual reality - weather born with talent or not - its a physical type discipline in that it takes hard work to develop and maintain

Perhaps one of the best comments I have ever had the privilege to read on this trash heap called U tube.

  • The reason the results of this experiment trump all other relative knowledge is that in the "there is stuff out there" theory light lets us observe it and tells its bosons what type of matter to be. Now we know that photons having a speed is illusion. So we can throw out relativity, thermodynamics, pretty much and model that includes thing that depend on spacetime, like motion, direction, matter, energy, etc.

Hmm, how unintuitive, we say, and go back to our calling delusion reality.

  • In delayed choice, perception ITSELF has been massively redefined. This is not an equation. This is observed experimental data that was done CLEAN and is not subject to the doubts that the former quantum eraser experiments were. No discussioin of factual reality should ignore this experiment. It is WAY more important than the double slit or the hadron collider. Delayed choice demands, if we are honesst, the most massive paradigm shift science or mankind has ever gone through.

  • You call perception "empirical reality." It's just perception. The sun does not really orbit the earth. The "reality" you speak of is always a relative partial picture due to ignorance...and gradually we look deeper until we get our ignorance sorted out, but that requires that when we discover "AHH, the earther is the one orbiting the sun. WE are not the center of the planetary system" that the rest of just don't keep on saying the earth is flat the sun goes round it because that's reality.

  • Redesigning our habitual ways of thinking about actuality, so that delayed choice is taken into account rather than ignored is necessary progress. In a dyanmic landscape of flux, progress is necessarry just to survive, just to maintain the status quo.

The reason we have semiconductors is because the quantum description is a more effective description than the newtonian. A nation that adheres to the old will be ruled by the one who embraces the paradigm shifts that discovery requires.

  • EXCEPT, that is just a perspective.and no perspective is absolutely true. It's just a way to look at it. I could just as easily say that every perception and individuation is generated by the brain, and brain material and energy are not distinct from any territory except that it is claimed to be so by the material brain, and that being brain in a body is just a perception or limited point of view as well.

  • When I asked do you want an apple one person visualized the rotten apple her brother stuffed in her mouth until she vomited back when she was six, and one pictures the granny smith her mom uses to share with her after the grocery shopping. The distinctions in the mind, the symbols, activate visualizations or ideas which are unique in each of us, the associations being raically different because the context, our belief system is unique to each of us. Distinctions are not the territory.

  • Map territory confusion doesn't explain delayed choice. Delayed choice says the equations are right, human assumptions and perceptions were just a partial picture as usual.

Math is just a language, abstract symbols describing relativity or relationship. 1a + 1b = 1c where a is shredded carrots and b shredded cabbage and c is coleslaw, or Do you want an apple?

The map territory confusion is thinking the DISTINCTION that makes coleslaw coleslaw is of the territory. It isn't.
