Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe sung by Hermann Prey. Piano: Leonard Hokanson - Part 4/4

------------------------------------------

15. Aus alten Märchen winkt es
Author(s): Heinrich Heine

Aus alten Märchen winkt es
Hervor mit weißer Hand,
Da singt es und da klingt es
Von einem Zauberland;

Wo bunte Blumen blühen
Im gold'nen Abendlicht,
Und lieblich duftend glühen,
Mit bräutlichem Gesicht;

Und grüne Bäume singen
Uralte Melodei'n,
Die Lüfte heimlich klingen,
Und Vögel schmettern drein;

Und Nebelbilder steigen
Wohl aus der Erd' hervor,
Und tanzen luft'gen Reigen
Im wunderlichen Chor;

Und blaue Funken brennen
An jedem Blatt und Reis,
Und rote Lichter rennen
Im irren, wirren Kreis;

Und laute Quellen brechen
Aus wildem Marmorstein.
Und seltsam in den Bächen
Strahlt fort der Widerschein.

Ach, könnt' ich dorthin kommen,
Und dort mein Herz erfreu'n,
Und aller Qual entnommen,
Und frei und selig sein!

Ach! jenes Land der Wonne,
Das seh' ich oft im Traum,
Doch kommt die Morgensonne,
Zerfließt's wie eitel Schaum.

16. Die alten, bösen Lieder
Author(s): Heinrich Heine

Die alten, bösen Lieder,
Die Träume bös' und arg,
Die laßt uns jetzt begraben,
Holt einen großen Sarg.

Hinein leg' ich gar manches,
Doch sag' ich noch nicht, was;
Der Sarg muß sein noch größer,
Wie's Heidelberger Faß.

Und holt eine Totenbahre,
Und Bretter fest und dick;
Auch muß sie sein noch länger,
Als wie zu Mainz die Brück'.

Und holt mir auch zwölf Riesen,
Die müssen noch stärker sein
Als wie der starke Christoph
Im Dom zu Köln am Rhein.

Die sollen den Sarg forttragen,
Und senken ins Meer hinab;
Denn solchem großen Sarge
Gebührt ein großes Grab.

Wißt ihr, warum der Sarg wohl
So groß und schwer mag sein?
Ich senkt' auch meine Liebe
Und meinen Schmerz hinein.

  • This whole show is a priceless gem! Where was it buried?!...

  • So am I! In general, performers such as actors and singers avoid the use of their hands for fear of the audience's reactions; but Prey always uses them quite aesthetically - because quite naturally, I suppose...

  • ¡Me gustan muchísimo!!!. Gracias.-

  • I always wondered how it was possible that Prey was an excellent Figaro (of Rossini) AND gave the best and most passionate and tragic performance of the Dichterliebe.

    I feel that this cycle must have meant something special for him.

    And now I see both performances on the same page of YouTube!

  • thank u!

  • An astonishingly profound and significant work. Those three repeated cadences at the end always tug at my heart strings.

  • Unfortunately I can't answer your question, because - I think - there isn't any. Hermann Prey did this cycle so beautifully, astonishing and with great love for the language, for the notes and for the music, I couldn't hold myself from crying when heard the whole piece. I absolutely adore Mr. Pray as a singer in general and think, he was one of the most musical Baritons ever. He must be in no ones shadow!

    Bravo Mr. Prey!!

  • Danke.

  • i think R. Schumann is buried in Duesseldorf, this work... i dont know, it is pretty early in his life, think from when he got married

  • splendido duo quello di hermann prey e leonard hokanson, grande poesia in musica......

  • Everytime I see the entire cycle I have no doubts that Hermann Prey was, is and will be one of the greatest lieder singer of all times.

    But there is one thing I will never understand, why he has yet not received all the recognition he should have had. If someone could please answer this but please do not give me the easy answer that he was outshine by DFD because I do not buy that.

    Thanks a lot Hermann Prey you will always remain as one of the glories of classical music.

  • R.Schumann was a very romantic man
