I always wondered how it was possible that Prey was an excellent Figaro (of Rossini) AND gave the best and most passionate and tragic performance of the Dichterliebe.
I feel that this cycle must have meant something special for him.
And now I see both performances on the same page of YouTube!

An astonishingly profound and significant work. Those three repeated cadences at the end always tug at my heart strings.

Unfortunately I can't answer your question, because - I think - there isn't any. Hermann Prey did this cycle so beautifully, astonishing and with great love for the language, for the notes and for the music, I couldn't hold myself from crying when heard the whole piece. I absolutely adore Mr. Pray as a singer in general and think, he was one of the most musical Baritons ever. He must be in no ones shadow!
Bravo Mr. Prey!!

Everytime I see the entire cycle I have no doubts that Hermann Prey was, is and will be one of the greatest lieder singer of all times.
But there is one thing I will never understand, why he has yet not received all the recognition he should have had. If someone could please answer this but please do not give me the easy answer that he was outshine by DFD because I do not buy that.
Thanks a lot Hermann Prey you will always remain as one of the glories of classical music.

So am I! In general, performers such as actors and singers avoid the use of their hands for fear of the audience's reactions; but Prey always uses them quite aesthetically - because quite naturally, I suppose...
