  • EPDM is that the same as ice n water shield. I will research.

  • EPDM is not the same as ice and water. It is extruded poly dimethylide. It is a like a rubber liner. It is much more rugged than ice and water shield. It is used in many commercial grade applications, and is often used on flat or low pitch roofs because it is a complete membrane over the whole roof.

  • why didn't you use natural materials? plastic is no substitute for slate and rubber is a far cry from copper. all of the plastic and rubber on your home will need to be replaced soon and will end up in a landfill. natural materials would easily outlast your structure and safely return to the earth from where they came. on behalf of all the real slaters, builders and true purists out there...stop calling plastic slate!!!!!! and stop calling what you're building an earthship..not even close!!!

  • Realslater, We used many natural materials. It is hard to be on a budget, and a time constraint, and want to do everything in a particular way. I feel good about the eco star Majestic-slate because recycling is an important concept in our house. The tiles are made from recycled tires, and have 40 year guarantee, which is as good as I could get on any other roofing I could find.

The earthship concept we are building is based on the work of Michael Reynolds (see earthship biotechture)

  • great job

  • They use it for pond liners

  • EPDM is chemically inert

  • Not sure if you are planning on harvesting rain water but could there be any negative affects to the water caused by the rubber roofing material?

Looking great by the way. Always excited to see the progress.

  • Looks awesome; love it.
