Words cannot explain what took place this past weekend down at my place in South Texas. I was asked some time back by a friend of mine Pat Q. from Port Allen, La. if I could bring him and his son on a deer hunt and see if we could try to get his son on his first deer. I have always been up for that kind of challenge and have brought a lot of kids in the past to the ranch so they could get their first deer.
My buddy's son Ryan was 10 years old and had never hunted for deer or shot a high powered rifle before. So a few weeks back I asked him to stop by the house and we would see if we could fit him up to one of the many youth model rifles we have (All these girls we have each have there own deer rifle). So we found one that fit him good. So the next step was to work with him on where to shoot the deer (shot placement). I keep a bunch of life size deer targets that show the vitals so both his Dad and I worked with him on that. His Dads assignment was then to take Ryan to the range and put as much time shooting as he could. I told both of them that Ryan needed to be able to make clean kill shots out to 35 yards. All of this fell into place so we were ready to take Ryan on his first deer hunt!
We arrived in the early afternoon and quickly unpacked and got Ryan all ready for his first hunt. I went over some safety rules and instructions on what and how we would hunt. We then headed out to a stand where I had been seeing quite a few Does all season. I dropped of Pat and Ryan at the box blind and moved my truck about 300 yards away. While I was walking back to the stand I could see Pat motioning to me that there was already deer out feeding. I eased up to the stand and climbed in. Sure enough we had several deer already out feeding. We got Ryan situated and loaded his rifle. I got my camcorder setup and ready. It did not take long and we had several Doe's working there way close to us. I whispered to Ryan which Doe to get on and told him to get ready. I started videoing and told him to take the shot when he was ready. Boom......... perfect shot on a big Doe and she stumbled into the brush.
Ryan was so excited so we climbed down and found his big Doe only about 50 yards in the brush. After a few high 5's and some blood on his face we dragged the big Doe back out to the road only to find a group of Javelina's working there way in our direction. We quickly set up behind some brush and waited for them to get close. Ryan picked out a big Boar and squeezed of the shot and made a perfect hit while I was videoing the event. The Javelina went down in his tracks. By now Ryan and his Dad were beside themselves with excitement. We took some pics and more video and loaded both the deer and Javelina in my truck. All of this took less than an hour and we still had a lot of day light left!
Well I knew of an area that we generally see a lot of hogs so we jumped in the truck and headed to that stand. As soon as we arrived I could see some hogs under one of our feeders. We snuck up to the stand and climbed in. The only problem was this was going to be a 120 yard shot! Ryan had never attempted a shot like that. He has only practiced out to 30-50 yards at the range. We settled in and watched the hogs for a short while. We then set up Ryan with his Rifle and a sand bag on the window seal. I started videoing and I asked Ryan if he could hold steady enough to make a shot. He said he could so I told him take the shot when he was ready. Well the hogs crossed and Ryan squeezed off the shot. I could see in the view finder of the camcorder that 2 hogs fell. Man that was some excitement in that blind!! I could not believe what I had just witnessed. In less then 2 hours Ryan had taken his first deer, his first Javelina, and his first 2 hogs with just 3 shots and I captured all of the action on video!!
Wait it gets better!
I went and got my truck and we headed down to pick up the hogs. While Pat and I were loading up the Hogs the rabbits started coming out just before dark. We had brought a single shot 410 shotgun along so Ryan could try to get him a rabbit or two while on the trip. We handed the 410 to Ryan with a few shells and he started working the rabbits over. Then a covey of Quail came out!
OMG we had to stop him!!! He had 5 rabbits and a quail!
This kid is a killing machine!! I think the Navy Seals or Marine Snipers will be looking at him in the coming years!
All in all Ryan took all these animals in under 3 hours of his first ever deer hunt and I have it all captured on video!
This past weekend I also sat with a few other hunters and captured some great footage and 5 other great hunts that I will upload to YouTube and post on LSM in a few days.
This Ranch is located in Zavala County 60 miles south of San Antonio Texas.
Thanks for all the great comments. This young man had a blast and I had never seen action like that all the years I have hunted. This was on of those hunts were everything just lined up perfect!!
