Here is our local Vintage Wings of Canada P51 attempting to start a few times. He seems to have had a flooding problem and actually has flames shooting out of the exhaust. Ironic that the Mustang is the one that Spits Fire!

Third time was the charm. Then the Merlin Powered Spitfire starts up after a little trying. Flying shots include my 3 year olds airplane recognition skills. From August 2006 at the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa.

Video quality is poor, but the sound is nice!

  • 1-2-3 MUSTAAANG!

    Love this vid!

    Thanks!

  • @kinkaid25 The Griffon was first used on the Spitfire Mk XII (12)

  • Saw one at an airshow once, where at first it sat as crowds walked by... but then every pilot that passed began to salute the aircraft itself. It then became the spectacle it deserved to be. The symbol of freedom, long live the spitfire.

  • You have to remember that the mustang was a dog of a plane at first until they put the merlin engine in it. It was that shit that the had to use it as a ground attack aircraft and it wasn't good at that either.

Wasn't it the British who put the merlin in the mustang in the first place?

  • You must also remember some "Spitfires also had "Griffon Engines in them, on the later supermarine mark 5 spitfires and not "Merlin Engines. Merlin Engines were on the earlier models of "Spitfires. I read that one American quoted " in a P-51, i feel like a sitting duck because of lack of armour on the plane, this gave the P-51 better overall range over a "SPITFIRE, but the "SPITFIRE had BETTER ARMOUR BETTER GUNNS BETTER HEIGHT SPEED BETTER OVERALL SPEED ON NEW MODELS.

  • @SupersonicStu06 Well, I think it's a pleasure to debate "Mustang" vs "Spitfire" both works of engineering art. But the Mustang had a Packard-Merlin engine. Significantly different in detail from the original, finely crafted beast.

  • The equivalent version of the Spitfire (mk XIV) is actually slightly faster then the P-51D. The Mustang had the range of the escort fighter it was. The Spit had the climb rate and cannon firepower of the interceptor it was.

  • omg it's a shame nothing sounds like that anymore !

  • The sound of those old engine's makes my hairs stand up! I hope I can always hear them when the need arises!

  • even though the spit dont have as much range as the stang,

    Id still take the Spit,

maybe its the exhaust stacks in the stang but the spit sounds noticably throatier than the stang even though they both have Roll's Merlin's,
