I remember going around the horn in 91 and the same thing happened...we almost lost an f-18 and a crewman to one of those waves

Yea, what MomOfSailorOnUSSKH said. I'll just add that even if they weren't visibily damaged though, for safety reasons those aircraft most likely had to be stripped down and inspected
