In this part we install Gnome but we use the rankmirrors script to make the download faster.

  • that will work but befor you go through the trouble of doing all that i have another idia.

i want to take ubuntu and change the logo, boot screen, startup sound, system name, host name, shut down jingle, and when a user says add a new account i want it to come up with my customisations and not ubuntu. think you can help me out or help me find help. if not the arch video you wanted to do is good to. sadly arch dose not run wine. i needed wine to run my applications so ubuntu is better for me.

  • @nickthetechguy1 @nickthetechguy1 Wine works in Arch, its availible in the repositories. Check out the Arch Wiki article on Wine for more info

  • ok here is a task for you... there is this thing called larch for arch linux. it is the same thing as remastersys for ubuntu but a lot harder to use. could you see if you can get that to work and help me and my friends understand it. that is when you get the time?

    "larch.berlios.de"

    good luck and thanks

  • @nickthetechguy1 Unfortunatly the newer versions of the Arch kernel donsn't have a feature that larch needs. I can try to make a tutorial on an alternative such as the tool arch makes there cds with. Would that be acceptable?

  • Didn't your use of the rankmirrors command not do anything, except rank the servers to the screen and not to the mirror file?

  • @eldersprig I think it rearranged some of the uncommented mirrors. if not you just run the command with a"> out" to stick the output in a file called out which you would then rm the old mirror list and cp "out" to mirrorlist. the bracket might be the otherway

  • @nickthetechguy1 I don't believe I said anything about visual effects. I said I would post another part showing you how to install a better gnome theme. Unfortunatly I got really busy with school and by the time I had the time to make another part, Gnome 3 had replaced Gnome2 in the Arch repos. Right now I'm considering making some tutorials on Archbang and the OpenBox window manager if I can find the time. Maybe holiday break?
