CHEN:
India is marking its independence day today. The country's prime minister gave a keynote speech addressing last month's bombing of its embassy in Kabul and the peace process with Pakistan. Here's more.

STORY:
India has blamed Pakistan's spy agency for the July 7 attack in which two Indian diplomats were among 58 people killed. Pakistan has denied any involvement.

The country's prime minister addressed a huge gathering from the fortifications of New Delhi's historic Red Fort to mark the Independence Day. First topic, Pakistan.

[Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister]:
"We will not be able to pursue the peace initiatives we want to take. The recent blasts in our Embassy in Kabul have cast a shadow over our efforts to normalize relations with Pakistan and to bring a lasting and honorable peace in our region. I have personally conveyed my concern and disappointment to the government of Pakistan.”

Singh sent out a message to the nation on the importance of the civilian nuclear deal with the United States. He says the deal will open up opportunities for trade and technology... and will help industrialize the entire country.

He also called for peace in troubled Indian Jammu and Kashmir. Singh says India is determined to counter the menace of terrorism.

[Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister]:
"What words can I find to condemn such acts of barbarism? I share the sorrow and grief of people affected by terrorism. The government of India will take concrete steps to rehabilitate and help such families.”

Security forces are on their highest alert across the country to prevent attacks from separatist militants and Maoist rebels. Snipers kept a close watch from high-rise buildings as Singh unfurled the national flag at the Red Fort to a 21-gun salute before addressing the nation.

India and Pakistan won freedom from the British on midnight of August 14 and 15 in 1947.
