A cut-scene from the Bulgarian movie "Khan Asparuh" (aka "681 - Glory of the khan"), the full Bulgarian version. The movie was made for the 1981 jubilee "1300 years since the creation of Bulgaria". It has absolutely no computer effects, all the actors are real (around 50 000 extras, to be concrete)!
This scene in particular shows the third part of the Byzantine assault on the Bulgar camp of Onglos/Ongal.

NOTE: All Pan-Turkic propaganda will be removed without any further ado.
NOTE2: English subtitles for the three movies can be found here:

  • Добра работа, мн як филм и показва бойния дух на българите, решителността им! Ние никога не сме се предавали и българско знаме не е попадало в вражески ръце! Трябва да се гордеем! :)

  • @TheNapoleon1805 Само да напомня, че българско знаме не е попадало във вражески ръце само по време на Третото царство. Иначе, през Средновековието сме губили достатъчно битки и съвсем вероятно е да сме губили и знамена и хоругви.

  • You guys really know your history.

The problem I've got with the action is the horses being tripped up. Similar to old black and white cowboy and indian films.

Can a horse actually be brought down by an arrow. Doubtful.

So why did the film makers feel the need to trip over all those horses when clearly they are breaking their necks and backs for real.

Thumbs up for the cavalry archers. But why spin round and face backwards. Surely it's easier to turn 180 degrees and fire.

  • @mrmarmalademan Don't worry, the horses aren't "breaking their necks and backs for real". Even today Bulgaria has some of the best stuntsmen (unlike most of our actors, unfortunately) and back in those days when we were still making good movies, they were even better.

And, yes, a horse can be brought down by an arrow, that's documented in many medieval sources. Also, many of the horses falling here do so not from arrows (though some indeed do), but from falling in hidden wolfpits.

  • Голяма работа сме комунистите, страхотен филм! Браво! Браво на Людмила Живкова за всичко това!

  • Even Roman battle tactics and Greek logic are no match for Bulgarian spirit and Slavic ambush :D

  • No horse was hurt or killed in that movie, the horses are trained to react that way after the have been "shot" believe me, my father was one of those soldiers in the movie. Back then he was in the army as well as all the soldiers participating in that movie.

  • @NikeBG Thanks for the reply.

Hope I wasn't being too critical because I forgot to say thank you for posting a wonderful film. I really enjoyed it. Especially the cinematography.
