Opposition Leaders Showered With Colored Water

Police humiliated opposition leaders in the city center as they attempted to walk to the constitutional square to hold a public rally. This was after police banned them from holding a public rally in any venue within the central business district.

The joint opposition group including DP president Norbert Mao, UPC's Dr. Olara Otunnu, independent Samuel Lubega and Jeema's Kibirige Mayanja were intercepted at Eagen house and sprayed with colored tear gas until they retreated back to Uganda house.

The use of this colored water was an innovation by police to crack down on those who participate in the protests since the stains sprayed on their clothes cannot be washed away.

The procession led by DP president Norbert Mao, UPC president Dr. Olara Otunnu, independent Samuel Lubega, and Jeema's Kibirige Mayanja accompanied by the youths set off from Uganda house for the constitutional square to hold a public rally. They were however intercepted twice by police operational commander, Moses Kafeero who tried to negotiate with the group not to disrupt business but his words fell on deaf ears.

In show to their determination the group broke way from the police barricade and proceeded. Mao together with Kibirige Mayanja managed to cross the junction and proceeded to the Constitutional Square. However the other group members didn't go far before the police tear gas van blocked them at Steers and pushed them back.

Although they were sprayed the group kept on holding together as they withstood the teargas and whenever police would pose, they would put their hands up in defense that they were not armed. But this did not deter police which continued showering the group with teargas till they were soaked.

They then retreated back to Uganda house where they addressed the media on their demise and encounter with police. However, the group also insisted that they will resume the walk-to-work campaign today while police insisted that their activities are illegal and the constitutional square remains heavily guarded by civil and military police.
