Piano Sonata No. 1, Op. 50, "Christus und die Fischer" (1969)
(in three movements)

A piano sonata by the contemporary Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara (b. 1928). The following is Rautavaara's description of his composition: "The sub-title of Piano Sonata No. 1, "Christus und die Fischer", composed in 1969, came from an old German print that hung on the wall above my piano at my summer villa on the Baltic Sea when I was writing the work. Perhaps the devout atmosphere of the print and the sound of the sea translated into the heavy rhythm of the opening. The rapid middle movement focuses on rhythm, particularly various combinations of 3/8 and 2/8, creating a restless and passionate mood. The slow, contrapuntal texture of the final movement, weaving around a chorale-like theme, is in sharp contrast to the preceding movement."

Piano: Laura Mikkola
