Betty Boop's inspiration? There's some connection (see note below) but the flapper-fatale and the poodle-girl soon parted cartoon company.

This rah-rah romance is up there with the Maine Stein & the Yale Whiffenpoof songs among college anthems put in the national hit parade by Rudy and the Yankees.

Music by J. Paul Fogarty; words by Rudy himself:

BETTY CO-ED

Flirtation is an art with Betty Co-ed,
Her station quite depends upon her charms,
She gets the men in rushes by well-cultivated blushes
And she's happy with a fellow on each arm!

Betty Co-ed has lips of red for Harvard,
Betty Co-ed has eyes of Yale's deep blue,
Betty Co-ed's a golden head for Princeton,
Her dress I guess is black for old Purdue!

Betty Co-ed's a smile for Pennsylvania,
Her heart is Dartmouth's treasure, so 'tis said,
Betty Co-ed is loved by every college boy,
But I'm the one who's loved by Betty Co-ed!

She made a wreck of Carnegie Tech and all of its engineers;
She did the same at old Notre Dame, her line is good for years;
Roguish eyes, telling lies, breathing sighs!

Betty Co-ed has lips of red for Cornell,
Betty Co-ed has eyes of Navy blue,
Betty Co-ed's a golden head for Amherst,
Her dress, I guess, is white for Georgia, too!

Betty Co-ed's a smile for old Northwestern,
Her heart is Texas's treasure, so 'tis said,
Betty Co-ed is loved by every college boy,
But I'm the one who's loved by Betty Co-ed!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...Although some claim that Betty's first name was established in the 1931 Screen Songs cartoon Betty Co-ed, this "Betty" was, in truth, an entirely different character. Though the song itself may have led to Betty's eventual christening, any references to Betty Co-ed as a Betty Boop vehicle have been made in error. (The official Betty Boop website describes the titular character as a "prototype" of Betty.) In all, there were at least 12 Screen Songs cartoons that featured either Betty Boop or a similar character...
  • De pronto siento ganas de pedalear
  • Lindo! lindo! lindo!. This song became the March for the major Uruguay bicycle tour.
  • I'm 13 and I like this song
  • Y la parte de los campeones del pedal donde esta???
  • good song
  • porque la vuelta... es la vuelta...
  • people either loved him or hated him, they used to say---I had parents in each camp! The anti attitude is hard to understand today. I think some people resented him doing all his own vocals; though I believe most people found him to be a pretty nice guy in person. To me, his records, just like this one, have superb arrangements and instrumentation. He would be flattered to
    know that people are still enjoying his
    78s after all these years and in such a new medium as You Tube.
