Tablet computers have been around for quite a while. But with the Apple iPad really raising the bar for quality and elegance and Amazon's Kindle Fire making basic tablets affordable for just about anyone with a will and a wallet, will Microsoft be able to approach the market with any angle unique enough to appeal to consumers not already taken with what's already out there? Ron Schenone looks at Microsoft's history and how its ways of ensuring profits aren't as surefire as they used to be.

  • @manhunt48 - Shows how much you know about Windows 8. In some cases, you can't STOP the switch from happening. Why do you think so many people are up in arms about it?

  • @shempone I have read a lot obout it and watched a lot about to and it totally is breaking new ground.

  • damn you're annoying :| I'm sorry but I just couldn't listen to what you were saying.

  • everything will be under 1 OS.

android will eventually under chrome OS(chromebook, chromebox); mac & iOS will be eventually be combined(launchpad).

  • Thank God we'll finally have a real tablet! ipad? nope. it's just an oversized itouch!

  • you basically get a tablet and a laptop in one. it doesn't fully replace the uses a laptop has, but i think it's very convenient

  • Nobody wants to pay more for a tablet, but some of us who are better off might be willing to pay more for a tablet with better quality hardware and software.

  • @shempone

I can photoshop, code, compile, run, any program in any language while being a tablet.

How is that not breaking ground?

  • if you open your mind, it all works out fine. ultimately i have been using the dev preview for months now on a dell duo and i have to say almost every single criticism is unfounded for what i have experienced. when your using touch you have no need to go to the desktop, certainly this will be the case in the final os. whilst the aero styled desktop will start to look more like metro to make the experience less daunting. people are likely to trust windows over android

  • Windows is trying to transition to an app interface so that piracy, modding, and license cracking become harder to practice. Don't fall for this bull shit, an stay away from cloud computing.

Chris Pirillo is a corporate whore. People do not like Windows 8 because of the combined interface. They do not like it because torrenting music and videos is harder to do. Windows is only giving both interfaces to reduce shock from loss of file access. Windows 9 will probably be just another iPad.
