It is a mistake to assume that trafficked children are no longer victims but "voluntary workers" once they reach the age of 18. Traffickers primarily target women and children because of the demand factors that take advantage of the vulnerability of women and children who are disproportionately affected by poverty and discrimination - factors that impede their access to employment, educational opportunities and other resources.
Human trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation is not work. Commercial sexual exploitation of women and girls of all ages, including prostitution, pornography, the Internet bride industry, and sex tourism, escalates gender-based violence.
An effective fight against trafficking means not sanctioning pimps as legitimate entrepreneurs and taking legal action against the buyers.
Without demand there would be no supply.
