Boosted by the record-setting popularity of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, video game giant Activision Blizzard posted better-than-expected results Wednesday night - but still couldn't manage a profit.

Although the new Call of Duty has sold more than 12 million copies, the company's losses grew to $286 million in the last three months of 2009 because of accounting changes and a hefty reduction of the value of its music games - like the popular Guitar Hero - and other titles for Nintendo's Wii console.

"Last year was a really tough year in the category," CEO Bobby Kotick said. "The casual consumer in an economy like this one is going to be very cautious about where they spend their dollars."

Nonetheless, Activision shares rallied in after-hours trading because the company said it would begin paying an annual stock dividend and also announced a $1 billion stock buyback program. During the regular session, shares added 5 cents, to $10.10. They later rose to $10.55.

"It shows you the strength and confidence we have," Kotick said.

Sales in the holiday quarter were led by Call of Duty and by online games like World of Warcraft, whose monthly fees make it especially profitable for Activision compared with other software games.

Yet the drop in music and casual games marks a reversal in two growth areas for Activision. Guitar Hero has been the leading music game, and Activision was among the early companies to shift resources to games for the Wii as Nintendo's console gained popularity.

Stores sold 996,000 units of Guitar Hero 5 through December, down from the 3.4 million units of Guitar Hero: World Tour sold in 2008, according to research firm NPD.

Last year was difficult for the video game industry, with video game sales sliding 9.8% in the United States, the world's largest market.
