If you look close you can see the youths are secured to their crosses with cables, for safety and legal liability reasons.

No it was not real but a representation of what really happenned 2000 years ago, this is a via crucis or via dolorosa presented at the World Youth Day in Sydney Australia last year. The webpage is wyd2008 . org
