Found this again & wanted to comment. That version of Boatman from Roscoe Parrish, who lived near Galax, VA. The original is on a wonderful collection called The Old Time Way, collected, recorded & annotated by Alice Gerrard & Andy Cahan in the late 70s-early 80s.
Mike has his banjo tuned in the old "drop C" tuning & is playing in a picking style that was once more common.
Great sound, although not like any "Boatman" I ever heard. Much better in fact. I'm not sure its the same melody. If it is, Rafe has added a lot of his own innovations. Can anyone enlighten me?
