I must admit I love Ronnie Drew and the Dubliner's version of this song, but it was Eric who wrote it and wow what a songwriter he is!

Buy this DVD, I highly recommend it!

  • Yes - buy it! Remember I bugged you to!

Perhaps post No Man's Land then Hallowed Ground as the pair that they are.

I think if folks want to hear the closing Singing the Spirit Home they ought to but it though.

  • @rdvqc Haha well thank you for bugging me I love this, I bought a Ralph McTell DVD too and love it! My university student loan has not been wasted!

  • No bells and whistles required when you're as good as these guys, my God what a sound!!! Bugger you Eric, you've got tears in my eyes again!!!

Thanks for sharing the genius of Eric Bogle.

  • This is Australia ... Awesome!

  • Cannot beat the man that wrote it to sing it!!! Although like Ronnie Drew's version too!!!

  • Ronnie Drew accompanied Stocktons Wing (rather than the Dubliners, per se)...lovely version, but always great to hear a song being sung by the writer. And what a writer!

  • what a tune hats off to eric bogle

  • pure gold.

  • I love this song , one of E.B's classics but lesser known. Thank you for posting such a wonderful version that I can now direct friends to.

I was a cockie too , in a life last century , and my soul still bleeds for the land.

  • First heard this sung by the Late Great Ronnie Drew...perhaps a sadder song you may not hear.

  • Thanks for all you do. I really enjoy most of the Irish songs you post.

  • As I have commented in the past, I am amazed the degree to which our tastes seem to overlap. All the more amazing given that it is more the 40 years since I worried about a student loan.

If you want to explore this side of the Atlantic, go poke around Ian Tyson and JP Cormier. You may also enjoy some old Stan Rogers stuff though we lost Stan about 30 years back.

  • Lovely!!
