"Welcome to New Orleans" is a 58 minute documentary about the city of New Orleans during the first year after Katrina. This film depicts the violence and racism in the impoverished American South. This is a story about the bottom-side of United States--a society that has been left to fend for itself. But more importantly, this film is about hope, in the face of overwhelming adversity.
"Welcome to New Orleans" depicts the ravaged city through the eyes of Malik Rahim, a 58-year-old former member of the Black Panthers, who stayed during and after Hurricane Katrina, in order to help residents. He has become a local hero, as he has built up his grassroots organization, Common Ground Collective, over the past two years. Common Ground has served over 170,000 residents with the help of 11,000 volunteers, who have traveled from all 50 states and 40 different countries.
But there is still plenty of work to be done. To find out more information, or to make a donation, please visit our site, www.commongroundrelief.org. Thank you.

  • @r25rjr --- That was just a few days after Katrina struck; There were volunteer police officers and firefighters from all over the country here helping with search and rescue, and helping restore order throughout the city. Kinda' like how durring 9/11 there were firefighters and volunteers from all over helping at ground zero.......

  • At 1:06 why did I see an NYPD van in new orleans?

  • The whole film is now free (for non-commercial use) for download on rasmusholm . dk

  • @jbissainthe Not all blacks, just a disproportionate number. If you're making the argument that self reliant blacks are the rule rather than the exception, you're either politically correct to a fault, in denial, or completely out of touch with reality.

  • @bahdahdoop, how dare you imply that all blacks are looking for a handout? Who made you God? I for one don't behave this nor have ever collected any handout (unemployment, food stamps, section 8 etc). I've been self reliant, always have been, thanks to God, my health and what little resources and skills I have. All it takes just one simple act of anything and you're up a creek. We're all just one paycheck, illness from being destitute. Why don't you try seek to understand first. Grow up.

  • Cool Video! When your ready to check out the hotels New Orleans has to offer check out our profile of Guest reviews of local hotels.

Its funny you say that... Just today at work i found out that my co-worker was the CEO of one of the biggest book store chains in British Columbia Canada during the 80's... now he works at a 12 dollar an hour job.... "because he likes staying active"

Little did i know that this man is worth a couple million dollars... i still cant/dont believe it.

Looks can be decieving... and in reality 50k really isnt that much for a man of his age.. plenty of time to save up.

  • Well said Bahdah, & where the hell did he get 50k to commit (from the government)?
