Erik shows the Allard Research and Development ethanol disltiller in Salmon, Idaho on May 21, 2009. The still column temperature is computer controlled. This control gives automated operation and efficiencey of distillation. Fermented feedstock solution (like sugar beets) is distilled by an electric heater that vaporizes the solution, which goes into the column. Ethanol is condensed from the column and sent to the ethanol tank at about 4 gallons per hour. Inputs are the feedstock solution, electricity, and cooling water. Output is 180 proof (90%) ethanol. This ethanol will run an engine or be mixed with gasoline to make E85 or any other proportion of ethanol and gasoline.

  • i don't entirely understand how the column is works but can see benefits of its design.

  • @xshoreLS1 It is just an automatic way to boil water that has a condenser column above it, The column gives off ethanol at the top. The water does not get to the top of the column because its vapor pressure is not as high as ethanol.

On Allard's website, they are trying the cellulosic ethanol idea. Industry and government can't do it. Maybe Allard can.
