I have had a lot of people ask how long it took me to learn Japanese lately, so here is the basic story of how I learned Japanese over what period of time. Note that my homestay in Fukuoka was only a 2 week long exchange, but it had a huge impact on my Japanese, and my desire to keep learning.

Enjoy!

Peace

  • i would say, without a doubt, the easiest way to learn Japanese is live there, nothing will motivate you more to learn it by wondering what everyone is saying around you, for me living in the UK and being so far from Japan makes me feel like not studying at all

  • pepsi shiso sounds like one of those drinks that you just have to try it twice to just make sure that you tasted what you did. lol anyway, sounds like you have had an interesting life.

  • Don't drink that crap it will rot your kidneys over time.

  • @alphafour Haha - reminds me of one day at college in Japanese class when my teacher asked us "right, now say 'my old girlfriend now lives in Italy'". None of us knew the expression for "ex-girlfriend" (moto-kanojo) so we all responded "watashi no toshiyori no kanojo wa Itaria ni sundeimasu (my elderly girlfriend lives in Italy)". Had the teacher in stitches.. :)

  • @becsta457639 Australia is pretty strong in Japanese education, and there are plenty of opportunities like AFS and Rotary exchanges if you would like to get to Japan yourself when you are 16 or 17 - but you've gotta study and get those grades!

  • @toi2codon I love Singapore!

  • @JIZZZification I started at 11, and am still learning now, so 25 years.

  • @SilverWolfblaze No, you don't have to start early, but it helps. It is a lot like sports - if you want to run track, no reason you can't start at 25 or 30, but anyone will tell you that the earlier you start, the better chance you have of rising higher.

  • @CoreyLongmire Sigh. The answer is I could have basic conversations after 3 months. I'm still learning now, and started when I was 11, so learning took 25 years and the meter is still running.

I think the question you want to know is how long it would take YOU to learn Japanese and get to a point that you could get by on your own. That is different for everyone, but I would say if you apply yourself 3-4 years of self study, 2 years of college study, or 6 months living here immersed.

  • for the short answer how many years total did it take you. Im watching this long video and you havent summed up how long it took you. Sigh

  • Do you have to start early? I keep hearing that.

  • i just like to know how long he learn japanese
