How to answer questions from lesson 7a.

點(樣) - dim (yeung) - how, in what manner
請問點(樣)去迪士尼樂園. - tsing man dim (yeung) hui dik si nei lok yuen
Please tell me how to go to Disneyland.
最快(就)係搭六號巴士. - dzui faai jau hai daap luk ho ba si.
The fastest (way) (in that case) is to ride the number 6 bus.
other ways of answering:
地鐵 - dei teet - subway (地 = ground, 鐵 = metal)
的士 - dik si - taxi
飛機 - fei gei - airplane (飛 = to fly, 機 = machine,device)
直昇機 - dzik sing gei - helicopter (直 = straight, 昇 = ascend, 機 = machine)
踹單車 - yaai daan tseh - ride a bicycle (踹 = step on, pedal,單 = single, 車 = car)

點解 - dim gaai - why = how to explain
你點解唔食飯? - nei dim gaai m sik faan?
Why aren't you eating rice? (eating rice actually means eating the meal)
我唔(肚)餓. - ngoh m to ngoh
Im not (belly) hungry.
我有啲唔舒服. -ngoh yau dee m sue fuk.
我有小小唔舒服. -ngoh yau siu siu m sue fuk.
I have a bit of discomfort. = I feel a bit sick.

幾 - gei - how, to what degree (when used in questions) or somewhat, quite
幾多 - gei doh - how much
你想買幾多個橙? - nei seung maai gei doh goh tsaang?
How many oranges do you want to buy?
(我想買)七個. - ngoh seung maai chat goh.
(I want to buy) 7 of them.

幾(多)錢 - gei (doh) tsin - how much (money)
呢個電視幾(多)錢? - nei goh din si gei (doh) tsin?
How much is this TV?
八百四十二蚊. - baat baak sei sap yi man.
842 dollars.
蚊 means mosquito but it sounds like mon in money.

幾時 - gei si - when
你幾時來探我? - nei gei si loi taam ngoh?
When are you coming to visit me?
前日 - tsin yat - the day before yesterday (前 = before, ago)
噚日 - cham yat - yesterday
今日 - gam yat - today (今 = now)
聽日 - ting yat - tomorrow
后日 - hau yat - the day after tomorrow
replace 日 with 晚 (maan = night), we last night,tonight,etc.
星期 - sing kei / 禮拜 - lai baai - week (星 = star, 期 = duration, 禮 = courtesy, good manner,拜 = worship, pay respect)
Monday to Saturday 星期/禮拜 + number. 星期一 = Monday, 禮拜三 = Wednesday
Sunday = 星期日 or 禮拜日
禮拜尾 - lai baai mei - weekend (尾 = tail,end)
上(一)個星期 - seung (yat) goh sing kei - or 上個禮拜 - seung goh lai baai - last week (上 = up, above, on top of)
今個月 - gam goh yuet - this month (月 = moon,month) (今 = now)
下(一)個星期二 - ha (yat) goh sing kei yi - next Tuesday. (下 = down, under, below)
We count weeks and months with the counter word 個. We don't use counter words for day, night, or years.
上(一)年 / 舊年 - seung (yat) nin / gau nin - last year (舊 = old)
今年 - gam nin - this year
下(一)年- ha (yat) nin - next year
三年前 - saam nin tsin - 3 years ago
四年後 - sei nin hau - 4 years later (後 = after, later)
五個月後 - ng goh yuet gau - 5 months later

Now we can form questions like:
你幾多個月前來探過我? - nei gei doh goh yuet tsin loi taam gwoh ngoh?
How many months ago did you come to visit me?
過 indicates past tense or the experience of having done something.

幾(多)點 - gei (doh) dim - what time
點 - dim - o' clock in the above case
夜晚班幾(多)點開始? - yeh maan baan gei (doh) dim hoi tsi?
What time does the night class start?
number + 點 + (verb)
十點(開始) - sap dim hoi tsi - It starts at 10.

幾(多)歲 - gei (doh) sui - how old
佢幾(多)歲開始學廣東話? - kui gei (doh) sui hoi chi hok gwong dung wa?
When did he start studying Cantonese?
number + 歲 + (verb)
六歲(開始) - luk sui hoi chi - I started from age 6.

  • Oh,I'm studying Japanese in university, but i want to study Cantonese because of some reasons. How can i talk with u as speaking lesson. :)

  • @MakeableDESIGNS Lui, Laam, and Lei are all HK accents... I prefer Nui, Naam, and Nei. But of course I'm used to HK accent too since they produce most of the TV, movie, song contents.

  • @tkviper LOL, i always hated people that speaked with HK accent, but I always say 女 like lui and 男 laam en 你 lei x3
