SOA Watch presents its new documentary "Somos Una America". Written and edited by Gabriela Uassouf (young activist in SOAW Latin America).

The School of the Americas changed its name (now Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) but continues to operate with the same instructors, in the same place, and with the same mission that it has always had: Training Latin American military to repress their own people in favor of U.S. economic and military interests. Today, new forms of military intervention add up to the SOA training: US/UN troops for "humanitarian aid", military presence and training in Latin American territory, and US military bases and facilities. But the organizing and unity of the peoples of the Americas, from Patagonia to Canada, are making the winds of change blow. More and more initiatives grow every day from all corners of this continent to say "No!" to militarization, and to create a culture of peace.

Fast-paced and energetic, Somos Una América brings together images from protest actions against U.S. bases in Colombia and a 2011 direct action at the White House. The film includes: footage of the SOA-led coup in Honduras and the coup attempt in Venezuela. Filmed by Argentine filmmaker Gabriela Uassouf over the course of the past year, Somos Una América offers a hopeful outlook and illustrates the power of the people as we work together to build a new world.

  • Somos Una América is the story of people from across the Americas, who are united in their struggle against the Pentagon mindset that is promoting U.S. domination and "military solutions" in the Western Hemisphere.

The film provides background on the School of the Americas and the campaign to shut it down, and then Somos Una América moves further: the film puts a spotlight on U.S. militarization and features the voices of a rising hemisphere-wide anti-militarization movement.
