Doesn't the use of the restraining box, where the head is forcefully pushed back cause a stress response in the animal already...? It seems that if the spinal cord was the first to go, there would be less controversy surrounding the humaneness of the slaughter method. After all, if you cut the spinal cord first, you prevent any sensory info. from traveling to the brain thereby ensuring no pain on the part of the animal.

Please look again. The head is restrained, but until the cut is made the animal feels no pain at all. If in stead of making the cut at that time you would open the box the cow would just walk out again. The use of a sharp knif and cutting all the way to the vertibrae in the back of the neck ensures the animal goes into shock and loses all senses before the pain is actually registered.

all the stress is in the blood... that why the goal of that halal slaughter is to bring out all the blood as fast as possible.

In case the animal gets stressed just before or during slaughter one of the responses is the muscles tension up and retain blood. For that reason it is important both for ritual and traditional slaughter that the animal is treated calmly before slaughter and that slaughter is done well. Recently research pointed out the heart of an animal continues beating for the same time after the cut for bleeding has been made, regardless of ritual or traditional slaughter.

Somebody on here said that these animals don't feel pain when they are slaughterd in this manner, well as a vet I can tell you that they do. This form of slaughter is cruel and should be banned , if you need to slaughter animals stun them first, if your religeon precludes you from stunning them, become vegeterian, this is 2009AD not 999AD

As long as the animal doesnt realize that its going to be slaughtered in this brutal way, it is not cruelty. But the animal should be killed immediatly, not leaving it half done with prolonging agony and pain.

The results of electroencephalograph (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) readings showed that Islamic ritual slaughtering caused a loss of consciousness before pain could be felt, while the captive bolt stunning caused severe pain to the animal before it lost consciousness.

@ TheBoris1971....Scientific Research Proves Islamic Slaughter is Humane

Professor Wilhelm Schulze of the Hannover University's School of Veterinary Medicine in Germany, and his colleague Dr. Hazim, compared the response of the brain and heart during and immediately after ritual slaughter and slaughter with captive bolt stunning, a method widely used in many slaughterhouses.

And by showing those politicians there are other more humane ways to perform the slaughtering they will start pushing for the according regulations (this is already happening more and more all over Europe). By making the change from rotating boxes in Europe for stationary boxes we can improve the quality in 3rd world countries with 2nd hand boxes while the quality in Europa also improves. One step at a time this takes us closer to a better world. Politics has and always will be slow

The fact is that halal slaughter is being conducted in the West and this eqipment will be used. Butchering in the street would not be permitted in the streets as it would be illegal. Unfortunately, our spineless politicians permit exceptions to the animal welfare regulations that apply to the rest of us. It's one thing for halal to exist in Muslim states, but not in the West, and I for one will continue to campaign with others for halal slaughter and products to be banned in Europe.

Check out Temple Grandins website to read about the signs of a completely stunned / senseless carcass. They are involuntary contractions of the muscles but the brain and nerves are already "switched off". A spontanious rockslide doesn't mean the mountain is alive (though it often feels like it!).
