Broken Hearts- Chapter Three [Maria's Dead?]

"Um, bye Denise." I said as I slipped on my shoes and coat. This was going to be.. awkward.. and painful.
I got into the passenger door of his Mercedes Benz and he started the car, "So, uh..what're you doing here?" I looked out the window absently, "Helping your mom out." He heard the edge in my voice and kept quiet for the rest of the ten minute drive around the woods. He pulled into my drive and his brow furrowed, "Why aren't there any lights on? Where's your mom?" I shook my head, did he really not remember? I hed back tears as I opened the door, "She died. Last year. You didn't come to the funeral." I slammed the door and went inside, a few tears spilling over.

*Nick's POV*
"She died. Last year. You didn't come to the funeral." With that, she slammed the door shut and ran inside. I couldn't be sure, but I think she was crying. Died? Maria died? Then who was living with Arie? Her dad was still in jail...it was a life sentence, right? But Maria? Dead? How? When? Why? Poor Arie.. I really did feel awful about what I did to her.. now she had no one. After what I did, she lost her dad, then me. And now her mom? This poor girl! I drove home and asked my mom about Maria.
"Honey, I did tell you. You were out with some Lana girl that night."
I struggled to remember, but couldn't. "How did it happen?" My mom shrugged, "Cancer. She'd been battling it for years, Nick, you knew that." I nodded. I did know, but I didn't know it had gotten that bad. "So, who's living with Arie?" My mom wiped her hands on the dish towel and shrugged, "No one." No one? Arie was living by herself? "What? She's alone?" My mom nodded. Her uncle helps her out, pays for food and everything. He's your Vice Principal. That's how she got in." I nodded, acting like it didn't matter. The truth was, I was in love with Ariena. But what could I do? I hurt her... so bad. Lost her trust, killed everything that was good about her life. All because I misunderstood.. I stalked off to my room and layed on my bed, thinking about that day was too much. I turned the music up so loud that it blocked my thoughts and eventually drifted off to sleep.
