A few days ago I bought a nice LED message display, and after finding out what data to send to it to control it (without using the sucky software which it came with), I have something new to work with StepMania! ^^

My program controlling the display works by reading StepMania's log file to see what you're doing on StepMania. However, StepMania only updates its log file when it's built up enough text to write (to avoid making the hard drive do unnecessary work), which means that my program sometimes doesn't realise what's happening (or doesn't until it's too late). At the end of a song (when StepMania shows "Failed" or "Cleared") is when this happens the most.

Unfortunately, detailed gameplay info (for example, how many "Great"s you got, or what your longest combo was) is not written to the log file. orz

The voice which announces the name of the song is just pre-recorded audio files, and I haven't recorded files for all songs. As you will hear, only the first 2 songs have their names announced.

Also, I forgot to set my camcorder's focus to manual, so the flashing of my StepMania lights messes up the autofocus a bit. Sorry xD

  • looks like something you would see with an awsome ddr machine *gasp* konami should do that with their ddr machines (it is konami right?)

  • Yes, it's Konami who invented DDR.

Unfortunately, the display doesn't work anymore, though (after using it via USB with my laptop for a couple of hours, it died o_O), and unfortunately, it's no longer on sale at the place I bought it from, meaning I'd need to spend nearly £100 to get a new one.

  • I'm not the one listing adjectives from a dictionary, nor pressing "Post Comment" by mistake instead of going onto a new line, nor trolling around your videos.

  • You'd have a much easier time with a source code modification, yeah?

Anyway, mind sending me the source code? I've been meaning to code a peripheral manager for a while, and that might not be a bad start.

  • Okay, done. I had a quick glance at the files, and it seems that the info for how to send text to the display kinda jumps in at the deep end and doesn't explain the basics - if you need any help, please feel free to message me. ;)

  • This was a not boring video. This like..a tutor, a gadjet show, a gameplay, and a how-to-be-a-mac guyver kind of vid

  • Dont mind Fin :S :P

    your awsome :D

  • stupid boy,

  • I love that Message Display concept. Remindes me of a IIDX machine! <3

  • I'll put the files on my server and put links in the video description now - please check back and refresh the page in 5 minutes or so. The only additional thing I can think of which I haven't mentioned is that, when sending groups of graphics, wait for about 20 mS before sending the next group because the display seems to have a slow flash memory.
