I heart Carl Sagan

Happy Carl Sagan Day!

I love the thoughts Carl Sagan inspires in my brain, so here's a little sample.

Almost every atom that makes up your body was manufactured inside of a star. Everything that is you came from across the universe, forged inside of now-dead stars, except for some of the hydrogen in your body, that hydrogen has been around since the beginning of the universe 13.7 billion years ago. Part of you is that old. part of you are 13.7 billion years old. The matter that makes up your body travelled from all corners of the universe as stardust to exist for this one instant as you. Even since you've started watching this - you've picked up some new stardust, and another wisp of atoms is gone from your body forever.

Religion says we're made of dirt. Science says we're made of stars. I can't understand why anyone would choose to believe something low when they could instead choose truth and beauty. I don't believe that a man died 2000 years ago so that I could live forever. I don't believe I'm that special. I believe what the evidence shows - that stars died billions of years ago so that I could live for one brief beautiful moment on a pale blue dot.

Almost every atom in my body is was manufactured in a star?? Sorry, but I'll have to correct you. First, none of the atoms were manufactured in stars; but most of the elements were created in stars, by combining these atoms created just after the Big Bang. Also, about 60-65% of the elements in our bodies are hydrogen, which all date back to the Big Bang. Pretty much all of the rest were manufactured in the hearts of stars though! sorry to correct you on that. Great video though

@caffingdu Sure, I should have stated that differently. Around 90-93% of our mass is from elements other than hydrogen, so that`s a good enough majority for me.

@nerdyharry 1. The stars/dirt thing is about how religion thinks on such a small space/time scale. Obviously dirt is made of stars. 2. My life is FAR harder than yours. I am sure of that. I just know how to enjoy the good bits and not wallow in self pity. If the world sucks any more than it needs to, it's because of attitudes like yours that seek out to bring down anyone who appears happy. Luckily your negative bullshit is impotent around these parts, and I'm going to have a glorious day.

Such enthusiasm! I feel the complete same way... Sagan, deGrasse Tyson, Dawkins... Forget religion, why limit yourself into believing that the phenomenal surroundings were created by some man 2000 years ago... To quote Neil deGrasse Tyson "I know that the molecules in my body are traceable to phenomena in the cosmos, that makes me want to grab people in the street and say 'Have you heard this?!'"
