English:
In this 1994 BBC adaptation of George Eliot's novel, altruism, social reform, and romantic love struggle to survive against snobbery, economic oppression, and self-indulgence. Set in the fictional town of Middlemarch in the 1830s, the film begins when Dr. Tertius Lydgate (Douglas Hodge) arrives in the community to begin a medical practice. Because of his knowledge of the latest medical techniques and his desire to do humanitarian work and pioneering laboratory research, Lydgate becomes the ideal candidate for the pro bono position of superintendent of a new Middlemarch hospital.
REPARTO: Rufus Sewell, Jonathan Firth, Juliet Aubrey, Robert Hardy, Peter Jeffrey, Caroline Harker

  • Rosamund is a shallow, selfish child. She has a decent honrable husband and can't see it because she's blinded by material things, I wish she had broken her neck when that horse was spooked, then Tertius would be free of her. (That's a terrible thing to say I know)

  • @ruzbehan yes, she is so stupid! too bad Dr. lydgate married such a fool, he is a really good man!

  • so hate Rosemond... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr cant stand her AT ALLLLLL...

  • Dorothea and Tertius would have made such a good couple. They both feel as though their lives should have some purpose to help others, whereas Rosamond only cares about money and material things.

  • It's good of Mary to shepherd Fred towards manhood. Lydgate chose poorly and is paying the price.

Dorothea seemed to get off lightly though - her mis-chosen spouse had the convenience to die.

  • Remeber too, rosey may be misdirecting her emotions. Women, even though they were treated as the lesser back then, had to chin up and tough it out to face society.

She has just lost her baby, and now se is being told she will loose her home. I think any woman, would be a little silly in the head after that. However, I dont excuse her actions. I am only saying, I can understand a little of what she is going through.

  • Rosamund is not as bad as everyone seems, yes she's been shallow and silly but you must remember she comes from a priviliged household of sorts and is used to the Aristocratic lifestyle and expects that to continue throughout her married life. Lydgate handled the situation well, apart from that she'd be a very agreeable wife.

  • Maybe she could bring in some extra cash--- on her back.

  • She cares more about the furniture than the baby they've lost, what a stupid, disagreeable creatur this Rosamund is.
