Common begginer mistakes. Note that this kind of move is not ALWAYS bad or wrong. But alot of lower level players will use this kind of move in the wrong situations thinking it's better.

  • I don't see this as a mistake, if it's san-ren-sei against an even player, you probably won't play like that, you'll choose a more flexible and light strategy. When playing against handicap, you can trust your opponent will read less than you, and this might work. I'm talking mid-kyus here, but maybe i'm overall wrong :) thanks for spreading Go anyways..

  • @oetamFCTC All of my videos and tatics are meant for even games. As for handicap, you might actually find it more common to not respond with a base making move at all and rather pincer (attack from the other side the the bottom middle star point stone) instead. It's a very common and very fast paced tatic. But it can be taken advantage of very easily if the opponent is of even strength, that's why it's only seen in handicap, to confuse the opponent and make things complicating.

  • You kind of hit the point, but your explanation doesn't make much sense to me. The example on the top with tsuke getting a nobi in response is probably the most random thing.

The explanation you gave about both becoming stronger by touching -- Isn't that exactly what white should do with a weak group inside black's field of influence? It's the option that should be considered when handling any weak group. The local loss from the diagonal tsuke you showed is in fact entirely contextual.

  • @mkiozipangbuu true, touching when weak is a common tatic. But in this case you can jsut make a half base with 1 eye and jump out versus you and black getting stones which black wants since the more stones he has the more points he gets. So here white wants to get out fast and quickly, not really live locally. If he touches in this case he will become "heavy" which is too many stones together and weak while not getting enough. Hope this helps!

  • @mkiozipangbuu As Brand said, it actually depends on the situation to decide weather or not to give your opponent strength in order to get strong yourself. What you said is correct in alot of cases, but those cases are mainly ones where you cannot play normally because your opponent is "already" strong and you need to invade. In this example, you can make a 1 point jump to make a base without giving the extra strength the shoulder hit gives. When you can avoid touch, you should try. outofspace..

  • whats the triangle thingy? u should make a vid explaining all the terms

  • @OtakuViking But you can't even touch me!

  • If you touch me, I will become stronger than you can possibly imagine!

  • So I'm an ultra-beginner trying to learn how to learn how to learn how to play. Why does touching let him get stronger but not touching not let him? Can't he still play the stone there no matter where you play (unless you threaten him somewhere else)? I'm afraid I will never understand strategy games...

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights!

  • @mkiozipangbuu actually strenghtening the opponent is exactly the thing you try to avoid when settling down, of course it is better to strenghten the opponent a little than to heve a very weak or dead group but here black's nobi is huge and so is the double hane, while w can't exactly settle in sente nor ligntly, but this is something you should try to "feel", it's not about territory so it's difficult to explain otherwise. but rest assured the 1 space jump is better here
