or possibly cause the batteries being dropped into the water creates a circuit. So electrons flow from the positive end of the battery to the negative end through the water causing the water to become electrically charges separating the hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen is flamable and so is oxygen when broken down into a gas.

This is simple to explain. As the batteries contains acid in it, those acid will diffuse out into the glass of water when the batteries were submerged in the water for 40mins. Therefore, the acid would cause the water to become flammable and burn upon ignition.
