Lifeguards compete; OC,MD 7/15/10

For the first time in nearly 20 years, the Ocean City Beach Patrol hosted a regional skills challenge for lifeguards.
Held on Wednesday at 21st Street, the competition included 19 beach patrols from Virginia to New York. Events like open water rescues and a 2 kilometer run make the event a sort of combination track and swim meet.
Beach flags race...13 competitors vie for 12 flags lying on the sand. Guards lie face down, away from the flags, and wait for a whistle. If you don't get the flag,
you're eliminated.
