Hey Wayne! Pete here. Awesome job as usual. Who cares how much bow you use?? The reason you play in the upper third of the bow is because the mechanics of the arm require it when playing fast in a slur two - detach two phrase at speed with string crossings. It is possible to play at tempo in the middle of the bow or to use more bow but you have more, higher, and faster arm and shoulder motion. It takes a lot of conditioning and practice to do that. Plus you will blow up your rotator cuff. Sound

its the underlying tapping of rhythm i can hear consistently that gives this tune life like sort of ooom duh ooom duh ooom duh duh. hard to express in words. being self taught i also have some weird styles but i never let anyone put me down when they say im doing it wrong, i just ask them to play the tune i just played in the exact same phrasing holding everything the way THEY think is right.
i have managed to work on my bow strokes and cut down side travel but anything else is moot for me

I just started practicing with a violin of my own and I wanted to learn this song.

The timbre of the notes is different depending on where on the bow and where on the string you play. Rather than a preference for one area or another, think of it as a palette of slightly different tones to choose from. Classical guitarists do similar things with the fingers and with the pluck point. Close to the bridge you get more of the high harmonics for a more tinny sound. Close to the center of the string you get less, for a more liquid sound.

This sounds great. A bit of a lesson for us learning. You seem to play pretty close to the tip of the bow - well into the upper half of the bow - does that help ? What does that do ? It does sound great - very melodic - great string crossings - good rhythm. Thanks for posting !

I have no idea about why I only use that little bow. Maybe a hazard of being self taught. I tend to catch a bit of flack for that. Thanks for your post!
