Adam Sessler interviews the author of the new book "Grand Theft Childhood" Lawrence Cutner, Cheryl Olsen.

They are directors and co-founders of the Harvard Medical School Center for Mental Health and Media.

Some interesting findings: Not playing video games affects socializing amongst males. Playing nothing but violent, M-rated video games for extend periods of time increases the risk for disruptive behavior from the teen.

Virginia Tech massacre instigator, Sun Lee Cho had very little experience and interaction with video games.

Games nowadays are more "simulations" that allow more creativity and interaction, even social interaction, like with the Nintendo Wii.

  • Finally a respectable person who actually DOES the research

  • the books not about parenting.. its about how all the tools out there who judge games before thye come out and use videogames as a scapegoat through irrational non real world scenarios i.e. foghorns and shit; they then pass off as "evidence" or some type of scientific proof. like when they stated pot was dangerous through "tests" when the tests were just them throwin' monkeys in tanks and filling it with pot smoke... then saying the pot killed them.. not the smoke that they assuredly choked on.

  • @dakhudson I'm just saying the conclusions these people are drawing from their own "research" is as far reaching as those who say the opposite. Saying games are "beneficial" to young men because the "researches" claim it's a measure of social competence? Like you're actually worse off not to play games? Then with the blither about it being "practice for the real world"? If anything games are getting more and more over the top and unlike real life.

  • @nta214 Honestly, I couldn't tell what you were even trying to get across. Are you angry at the video?

  • @lynchdude88 ...

  • adam sessler is an extremely smart guy, and he pretty much shits on everyone who says video games cause violence. im sure hitler didn't play gta4,halo,doom etc.

  • i like these people there anti jack tompsons. i thought it would be like games cause all evil and need to be distroid. but they seem like games are entertainment and nothing more

  • i read the book and it is pretty insightful, i had some disagreements about it, but for the most part it was good.

and i used to say it called parenting !!! but this book does have good studies and before you bitch i read it for a class and i am a gamer too.

  • intrigueing movie idea>>>

  • This is such a crock of shit. Rolling footage of random simulated acts of violence while saying "This is actually beneficial to young men", " Why are they called games? Kids, this is like real life, and you get to try again when you die!".

Who paid these morons? How many times do we have to hear about how some negative display of media is actually "great for our heath", every time it is called into question? Quick everyone, defend your piece of the cake!

  • I thank god for GTA because without that game i would have killed over a thounsand time, I say if your having a bad day take your anger on the inncent bystanders in gta.

  • It's just stupid. People don't know what connects these to. YES computer games affect your emotions however everything you do affects your emotions, driving does, music does, reading does. But what NONE of these do is makes you get a gun and shoot at people. People who blame music or games for crimes are just looking for a simple scap goat when there is never a one answer to such behaviour and the sooner people get that drilled into their thick skull, the better!
