An echocardiogram from a cat with severe cardiomyopathy, spontaneous echo contrast ("smoke") and a thrombus (clot) in the left auricle. A thrombus like this often breaks loose and gets carried to the terminal aorta where it lodges and cuts off blood supply to the rear limbs, causing acute paralysis.

  • My 13 year old tomcat has developed a paralysis in his hind quarters. Started about three weeks ago with him doing a swaggering walk and now he is fully paralyzed in the hind quarters. My question is will the blood clot affect his bladder muscles from emptying it's urine when he uses the litter box? He's four days at a hospital now being treated for paralysis and pulling his hair out and leaving huge wounds on his skin. Steroids are working on drying those up.
