The French violinist, Jacques Thibaud (1880.9.27 ~ 1953. 9.1) plays his teacher Marsick's composition, "Scherzando", for Fonotipia in 1904. A Columbia pressing made around early 1910s. This is one of Thibaud's first recordings - he made about 10 sides for Fonotipia between 1904 and 1905, and later made some more with Pathe Freres starting around 1917 until 1924, when he started to make recordings for HMV and Polydor.

I also have a electrical remake Thibaud made in 1927 for French HMV, but I prefer this version, as it shows more power and total control of the tone which he somewhat started to mellow (although relatively) after making electrical recordings.

Played on my modern equipment at 79.8rpm. The pressing quality is very good for Columbia of this vintage, and the sound quality is also very nice for 1904.

  • Better sound than on my Pathes.

  • TY. Such fine playing from one of my favorite players. Cute but trivial composition. Of course, having been Flesch's, Thibaud's, and Enescu's teacher was far from trivial. Thibaud's electric recordings of Granados, Falla, Saint-Saens, Vitali, etc. show his power and tonal control. He was more restrained with the trio and other recordings but certainly didn't hold back on many other recordings.
