Several laptop manufactuer's today are now incorporating a special "eSATA-USB Combo Port" (also known as an eSATAp Port) into laptops. These special ports give the convenience of USB power and fast transfer rates of SATA. This video demonstrates how to attach an Optical Drive externally via the eSATAp / eSATA-USB Combo port. Doing so frees up the optical drive bay for other uses, such as adding a 2nd hard drive. For more info visit http://newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=346

  • is it nessary to have an eSATA port? or is it just used to add in new harddrives?

  • nice

  • is that feauture / hardware plug and plya?

  • Thanks for that useful piece of info I'll remember this for future use but not that I'll put a new Drive on my Laptop. But atleast all thanks to the know how I'll use youtube more often for installng things on the PC.

  • HI Bro! Good job! eSATA/USB is also know as eSATAp. or Power over eSATA.

The good news is that almost 40% of the notebook have this high speed port.

Its easier to implement than USB 3.0 for desktop, because SATA is in the blood of PC & MAC. You simply requires a bracket. ZERO drivers. Hope to see more of these videos. -eSATAp Support Group (Singapore)

  • dude thats how you fuck ur laptop up your soppost to turn it off when you are ejecting and replacing drives

  • does the optical drive have to be a special esata device or is it just a standard sata as it appears to be, and therefore any hard drive/ optical drive will automatically work by just plugging it in?

  • I just bought that wire from newmodeus, seems like its come in useful with my alienware laptop
