Mainly because nice machines in good condition are becoming harder to find. You might want to check out the rec.games.pinball newsgroup. There are some decent deals there at times.
hahaahh ya I guess it's Fish Tales. I haven't touched it in a few years cuz I kinda gave up on it. the gameplay's slipped my mind but I'm pretty sure I knew about the monster fish and I've gotten into the 100s of millions on it, but just never got in the zone on it. I think the table slant is set really steep on the Fish Tales I've played on too.
I want one for home... but it seems like every decently interesting machine is $1500 or more. Why do old machines still cost so much?
I think the reason that I have problems with those machines is that they glitch... and missions aren't being highlighted when they're suppose to be, or it doesn't always register a hit.
The Dr Who I play is in terrible shape btw. The left flipper is always weak and the pub management's been giving me the runaround about "the tech" coming to fix it for like 5 years lol
I find that I run into a lot of run down pinball machines, and my experience is limited to the tables that actually work.
Also, by "Gone Fishin'", do you mean Fish Tales? If so then is all about the monster fish at first since it maxes out at 50 Million. But , the Billions can be made if you can get three Jackpots in multiball. After 3 Jackpots, the Super Jackpot lights at the center boat shot for 100 Million every time you hit it. If you can get three more jackpots then the Super lights for 200 Million per shot, and so on and so on.
Dr. Who is nice in that there more than a few ways to attack that game. If you can master the Playfield X loop ramp, you can get Sonic Boom awards for a total of 120 Million after each set of 10 loops.
OR you can keep making W-H-O combos for upwards of 12 Million per shot.
OR you could go for Video mode (hopefully at 4X playfield) to score about 100 Million plus extra ball plus spotting 4 doctors.
OR you could go for multiball, and if you can get to Davros, you instantly spot ALL doctors.
I'm sure you've already seen that for Terminator 2 it's all about the Super Jackpot shot in multiball. This one 50 Million point shot unbalances the game, and if you can get a ball trapped on the left flipper while repeatedly locking the ball in the skull with the right flipper, you'll have way more than 500 Million in no time.
My current foe is Dr Who. I just haven't sorted it out yet, I've had a lot of fun with Gone Fishin' but I just can't seem to get a massive score on it. I'm just consistently decent at it.
Another 2 I'm workin on are Lethal Weapon 3 and Terminator 2. They're pretty much the same layout with a few minor differences. I can play on both for extended periods, and keep earning replays, which is fun, but I can't seem to break half a billion on either. They seem to lack flow in the design
that sums up Royal Rumble in a nutshell lol. the upper ring is a jugglers wet dream. that's how i've broken a billion so many times on it.
some machines are definitely harder than others. my arch nemesis is The Adams Family because it's so unforgiving, offers no second chances if your ball goes down quickly, and extra balls are scarce. Breaking a billion on it was the most epic battle I've endured.
Btw, the moment I discover a glitch or flipper problem, I walk away, even on ball 1
Pinball's like sex. We all think we're amazing at it but for most it's just a few minutes of chaos and loud noises and it's over.
With experience, we come to realize that every one has different needs and one must pay attention to the right targets at the right times.
The true master realizes that it's not about trying beating the championship score on the first game.... but about just scoring high enough to earn a replay over and over again... until the machine makes you its champion.

UNLESS... you're playing a poorly designed game wherein you can rape a specific shot over, and over, and over again. :)
