Eh, he wasn't that bad. Not a genius, but also not an idiot. The problem was that his army was a mix of disparate warlords with their own agendas. When he gave 5 generals orders to attack north, 2 would attack, 2 would fake it because they had no actual troops and embezzled all the supplies and money for personal gain and the last one would look north and try to strike a deal with whoever was about to get attacked.
