The Symbionese Liberation Army (S.L.A.) was an American self-styled militant group active between 1973 and 1975 that considered itself a revolutionary vanguard army. The group committed bank robberies, two murders and other acts of violence.

The S.L.A. became internationally notorious for kidnapping media heiress Patty Hearst, abducting the 19-year-old as she and her 26-year-old boyfriend, Steven Weed, sat relaxing in their Berkeley, California home. National interest grew into worldwide fascination when Hearst, in audiotaped messages delivered to (and broadcast by) regional news media, denounced her parents and announced she had joined the S.L.A. She was subsequently observed participating in their illegal activities. Hearst later alleged that she had been held in close confinement, and brainwashed.

On May 17,1974 Los Angeles police surrounded a house where most SLA members were holed up. A massive shootout ensued, and the building went up in flames -- shown live on television.

  • Patty Hearst was brainwashed. If she had joined the SLA of her own choice she could of gone home and with access to her trust fund supported the SLA better than some small time crime spree.

  • @hoosierdaddyinsfca Thats a very good point! Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • Did you know the ACLU brought a suit against the LAPD for violating the SLA civil liberties.

  • No I didn't, but I'm not surprised. Thanks for watching!

  • Doesn't seem fair that patty Hearst recieved a commutation while the others are still in prison. If Patty had been kidnapped and brainwashed how do you know the others weren't. It's good to be rich.

  • In my opinion Patty Hearst became as guilty as the other SLA fuckers

  • @ComradeDG

    no idea leftovers from WWII?

  • Why do I see the LAPD using Nazi German MP 40 submachine guns from WWII here?

  • I remember that day, I was on the next block mowing the lawn in the yard on the next street. I shut off the mower when I saw all the smoke, and then then I heard all the gun shots. I could have been hit.

the guy that I worked for asked me where the police were going. they ran through the yard, I didn't see them. I was too busy working. I was on live television news that night.

  • I remember seeing this on TV when I was 14. I remember hearing the tapes of Patty Heast's voice calling her parents pigs. Well, there's always a happy ending: the SLA scumbags are dead.

  • @cheapy2006 A lot of major police standoffs have ended in the building down. The SLA, MOVE, Robert Jay Mathews, The Branch Davidians, etc.

Fighting the police while holed up in some house is an almost guaranteed death sentence.

  • i was 17 and lived 2 doors down when this happened.....all i can say is they were very nice to us....spoke all the time....called me young blood...

  • Capitalism is doomed.

  • @Wardog687 Man, i like you. You got a clear headed attitude. Plain and simple.

  • The SLA members just do time? I say hang em.
