Johannesburg is the largest economic metropolis in Africa. Downtown Johannesburg, however, is one of the world's most violent places. Most offi ce buildings have been vacated or squatted and are occupied by various groups of illegal Africans from neighbouring countries. Thousands of fortune seekers are trying to build a new life in this anarchist urban jungle. Meanwhile, the city is preparing for the World Cup soccer 2010, an important opportunity for Johannesburg to present itself to the world. The city centre needs to be cleaned up, and everything is being done to make sure that this major event will run smoothly. But will it succeed? And what will be the consequences for the thousands of immigrants in the city center? Rob Schröder visited Johannesburg repeatedly since January 2008 to document the changes. Is it possible to control this city of hope and fear, and to transform its center into a safe and acceptable place to live? And how does anyone survive in Johannesburg at all?

@one point of time south africans, both minorties and majoritieswill have to stop making excuses and sarcastic comments and get to work. I'm quite appalled that some people out there would resort to APARTHEID, such a shame! ,coming a south African!!!
from an african POV i sell very saddened by this but guess what it's easy to share blame around and point the finger,my comment to south african staying abroad,u are not helping in anyway ,coz it's your country unless........u probrably got double nationalities somewere else and u feel it gives u some kind of immunity to make comments ,again i'm not south african,
That makes 2 of us, I heard that Joburg has gone to hell but never thought it was going down so fast! In the 1970's and 1980's it use to be much better, yes there was problems, like any other place but not as bad as this, unfortunately, Apartheid was the lesser EVIL, now it is just getting worse! Another BANANA REPUBLIC! Such a Waste!
as a south african living abroad i find this documentary hard to watch but also very informative. i suddenly feel sad and sorry for the people in these bleak places.
