The SCV's faught valiantly, but to no avail.

Valkyrie is REALLY good against wraiths, cause wraiths are large units, therefore valkyries do full 6x8 splash damage.3 barrages are enough to kill all the wraiths.

It's not true that using SCVs to fight is a sign of desperation, especially in TvTs, because of how effective they are against seiged tanks. Used all the time to help defend expansions. However, in this case it was indeed desperation because it was in MVP's main base.
