  • Jerry clearly starts Morning Dew at the same time Bobby is starting El Paso. Billy follows Bobby on his choice and then Jerry quickly follows.

I've heard people say the wished Bobby had just let Jerry do his thing and keep it heavy and deep but I love how they could come out of such and epic Dark Star and start El Paso (which was played SOOOO much in 72/73) but is also so Grateful Dead.

  • morninh drew would of been sooo much better after dark star

  • Hehehe funny shit! Charles Lloydesque freejazz into country & western... That makes for breath of fresh air, doesn't it?

  • @MaroseMayhem Exactly right - they did this all the time. A deeply spacey thing and then 90 degrees right into a cowboy song. Personally, I always appreciated it because just when it was about time to start chewing on the seat in front of me, they would bring me back down to earth with a big goofy smile on my face....

  • This is just GREAT stuff!!!!

  • El Paso is such a great choice!! I imagine the warped sense of time some people must of had....high as a kite, deep in a face melting dark star jam one minute...then BAM!! Cowboy song!!! "Wait what just happened?"

    Thanks for the post!

  • Although i agree Morning Dew would have been sweet, these guys below me have correctly pointed out that that combo happened a lot around this time. The El Paso transition illustrates one of the coolest attributes of the Dead jammin' imho, and that is how they can just immediately switch from light airiness to dark deep space shit & vice versa.

Really freakin nice contrast between the craziness of the end of DS to the sweet country twang of El Paso.

  • Morning Dew may well have been a better choice but it also is the more obvious choice. I love the fact that they played El Paso after this I love the minor jam that Jerry is in and the transition into the major waltzing El Paso. Truly a genius.

An it makes for a transition that is rarely (ever?) repeated.

  • Out of one of the best Dark Stars ever into a waltz. Reorienting.
