They keep ruling Maria out, but the women's game has been amazingly tough this past decade and Maria is still getting to the finals of grand slams. She's a fantastic competitor.
@wiseguyknowsit I agree the 'shriek' is rsther annoying, but she hits the ball harder than a lot of the men on the tour! Her strokes are amazing don't see how she is struggling at all to hit the ball, strange comment.
I never liked Sharapova as a player. To me as good of a player as she is, her shots are so contrived and forced. Non of her shots are natural or feels natural to me. It's like she's struggling to hit every ball, even when she dominated and that annoying shriek.
Anyway I was sad Laura lost because I wanted to see a young player succeed. But time will come for her.
i think robson did very well indeed!:) she held her own against a former world no 1 and grand slam winner! and shes 16? that is quite remarkable really!!? she did the same thing on centre court of wimbledon last year against jankovic, who also almost took a set off!:O if she can handle the big occasions and top players like this i expect big things of her in the coming years! as she just gets better and better!!:)
We forget Laura Robson is now several inches taller than when she won the Junior title. Sharapova herself is 2 inches taller than when she was when she won the ladies singles. Laura will get stronger, learn and adapt. She's got the raw tools of timing and power like Maria had the same age, what she can add is going to be exciting.
Foreshadowing? Tough match against a non-conventional left-hander (someone who hits pretty flat and hard, rather than the Schnyder "lefty-ness" of looping every shot)
as robson gets older she will become more powerful and willl get more faster and better footwork.

Kind of interesting seeing how Robson being a lefty did the same things Kvitova did in the final. Guess Sharapova has a problem with leftys then no?
