Glyndebourne's celebrated production of Nikolaus Lehnhoff's Tristan und Isolde is a supremely intelligent achievement; gravely beautiful, haunting and meditative, it is deeply reflective rather than visceral, fortified by Roland Aeschlimann's stunningly effective set, a womb-like space through which the protagonists move like gods. Conductor Jiří Bělohlávek mirrors Lehnhoff's approach in his sophisticated plumbing of the score's depths, with every shift in texture carefully laid bare by an inspired London Philharmonic Orchestra. Nina Stemme's Isolde and Robert Gambill's Tristan, both gloriously lyrical, are matched by superb performances from René Pape as the betrayed and vulnerable King Marke and Bo Skovhus as Kurwenal, deeply touching in his helpless devotion to Tristan. This High Definition recording of a production of uncommon intimacy reveals the opera's music and drama in a new light.

  • I would put "Tristan and Isolde" on an "empty" stage. First act in blue light, second act in red light, third act in grey turning gradually into total black. You would be surprised how the music came over.

  • @Jitpring Although you posted your comment about one year ago allow me to answer you. I disagree with you although I respect your opinion. I think the less there is on stage and the more abstract the stage setting is the better it is for Wagner's music. I emphasize WAGNER'S MUSIC. Sure, the story is taking place in early mediaeval Cornwall and Brittany but Wagner's music of Tristan and Isolde is, more than the one of his other operas, timeless.

  • Time Tunnel? Very interesting production. Tristan and Isolde is my favourite opera anyway! Thanks for posting.

  • I prefer the Slim Whitman and Patsy Cline version.

  • @Jitpring This production is gorgeous. Clearly you know nothing about Wagner's writings: Theater of the Future! Get with it and stop with the stupid remarks.

  • i saw this last summer at glynde - it was sensational. My brother cried at end of act one, i was distraught but inspired by the time we got to the last act. Lady next to me stood up in the aisle, she couldnt stay in her seat at the end - what a performance, what a way to be introduced to wagner!

  • ty, Opus Arte, I will buy this performance on bluray, and ( I,m not joking), I need other performance of " tristan und Isolde " with Meier, those 2 singers the best Isolde today
