Experimental Uniflow outboard engine with electrical operated inlet valve. Just playing one afternoon, ended with the aluminium piston seizing in the bore due to temperature!

  • Did you use some kind of lubrication?

  • @gschjetne Just occasional splash of engine oil into crankcase. Plan was to seal off transfer port and extend the crankcase to make it into a traditional sump with splash lubrication. Heat expansion of the alloy piston makes it unusable without casting iron pistons. Have now moved onto the Bower and Bell engine in the other video.

  • Did you convert a production gas outboard motor? What was it?

  • Just as bog standard 2 stroke outboard.Think it was a Mercury but can't remember, now scrapped because the aluminium pistons expand too much with the steam heat then siezed. Solution is to make cast iron pistons, seperate the sump from the inlet ports and have a wet sump.

  • Well, you got carried away and buggered this up eh?

  • think of the steam engine piston materials, and then machine and retrofit, could be pretty neat boat setup! Good work! It's like art--

  • You proved the concept.

  • Very cool project!

  • Why is there no sound??
