My unexpected extra day in Austria (May 9, 2008) due to a rebooking of my flight was a gorgeous day with brilliant sunshine and pleasant temperatures in the mid twenties (Celsius). I started with an exploration of the Western part of town and began a hike up the Kapuzinerberg from where I had a great vantage point towards the Castle of Hohensalzburg and the city. I stopped off for a typical Austrian lunch at the Franziskischlössl, a small historic castle surrounded by fortification walls, built in 1629 during the Thirty Years War. From there I had a great view over the northern, eastern and southern portions of the town.
After my descent from the mountain I discovered some major sights on the banks of the Salzach River. I enjoyed the sunny walk along the banks of the Salzach River where dozens of young people were sitting and lying in the sun and enjoying the day. I then stopped in the impressive gardens of the Castle of Mirabell which was part of the Habsburg Monarchy. In the late afternoon I finally made my way back to the airport and spent some time watching the airport activity from the open air rooftop terrace at the Salzburg Airport. After a gorgeous extra day in Austria, I finally succeeded in flying to London.
